Overview

Sulbactam sodium is the sodium salt form of sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor and derivative of the basic penicillin nucleus. It is not typically used alone but in combination with beta-lactam antibiotics to treat bacterial infections by inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria that would otherwise degrade these antibiotics and confer resistance. Sulbactam acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamases and has weak intrinsic antibacterial activity through inhibition of penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) 1 and 3 but not PBP2[1][5][8]. Its primary clinical use is as part of injectable combinations such as ampicillin/sulbactam for treating various susceptible bacterial infections.
