Overview

Sulbenicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic belonging to the carboxypenicillin subclass. It is structurally related to ticarcillin and carbenicillin, and was developed for use against Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Sulbenicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. It has been used primarily in hospital settings for severe infections caused by susceptible organisms, especially those resistant to other penicillins due to its extended spectrum of activity against Gram-negative pathogens. Sulbenicillin may be combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors or aminoglycosides for synergistic effects in certain clinical scenarios.
