Overview

Sulbenicillin sodium is a semi-synthetic carboxypenicillin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* and *Proteus* species. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through the binding and inactivation of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for peptidoglycan cross-linking. This inhibition leads to cell wall weakening and osmotic lysis of the bacteria. Sulbenicillin sodium has been approved and used clinically in several countries, including Japan and China, for the treatment of serious infections such as sepsis, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections. Recent clinical development, notably by Hunan Sanqing Pharmaceutical, has focused on the D(-)-isomer of sulbenicillin sodium to evaluate its safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy in indications like complicated skin and soft tissue infections and intra-abdominal infections.
