Overview

Sulconazole is a synthetic imidazole antifungal agent used topically to treat superficial fungal infections of the skin, including tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea versicolor (pityriasis versicolor)[1][3][4][5]. It is available as a cream or solution for topical application. The drug works by inhibiting lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, a cytochrome P-450-dependent enzyme in fungi that is essential for converting lanosterol to ergosterol—a key component of the fungal cell membrane[4][6]. Inhibition of this enzyme disrupts ergosterol synthesis, leading to increased cellular permeability and ultimately fungal cell death[6][8]. Sulconazole was first approved in 1985 and is considered effective and well-tolerated for superficial mycoses[6].
