Overview

Sulfabenzamide is a synthetic small molecule antibacterial agent belonging to the sulfonamide class. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, thereby blocking folic acid biosynthesis essential for bacterial growth. Sulfabenzamide has been primarily used in combination with other sulfonamides (sulfathiazole and sulfacetamide) in topical and intravaginal preparations, notably under the brand name Sultrin, for the treatment of vaginitis caused by Haemophilus (Gardnerella) vaginalis. The drug was approved by the FDA in 1945 but has since been discontinued in the United States; it may still be available or approved elsewhere[1][2][3][5][8].
