Overview

Sulfabromomethazine is a synthetic sulfonamide antibacterial agent primarily used in veterinary medicine. It is structurally related to other sulfonamides such as sulfamethazine and acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. By mimicking para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), it blocks the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid, an essential precursor for bacterial folate production and DNA synthesis. This results in bacteriostatic activity against susceptible organisms. Sulfabromomethazine has been used to treat and prevent various bacterial infections in food-producing animals.
