Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sulfacetamide sodium + sulfur is a topical combination therapy used for the treatment of acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, and seborrheic dermatitis. It consists of sulfacetamide sodium, a sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and sulfur, which provides keratolytic and antifungal properties while inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes. This formulation is available in various topical forms such as cleansers, creams, and foams. Although widely used, many versions of this combination are marketed without formal FDA approval under the unapproved drugs category.
