Overview

Sulfaclozine, also known as sulfachloropyrazine, is a small molecule sulfonamide antibiotic and anticoccidial agent used primarily in veterinary medicine. It functions as a competitive antagonist of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), thereby inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS). This inhibition prevents the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid, a critical precursor for folic acid in bacteria and protozoa, leading to bacteriostatic and coccidiostatic effects. It is particularly effective against the second generation of coccidia cleavage. Sulfaclozine is indicated for the treatment of various poultry diseases, including coccidiosis (caused by *Eimeria* species), colibacteriosis, fowl cholera (*Pasteurella multocida*), and fowl typhoid (*Salmonella gallinarum*). It is also utilized in sheep and goats for the management of coccidiosis and is typically administered as a water-soluble powder via drinking water.
