Overview

Sulfacytine is a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic that was used primarily for the oral treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract and other bacterial infections. It belongs to the class of synthetic bacteriostatic antibiotics known as sulfonamides, which have a broad spectrum of activity against most gram-positive and many gram-negative organisms, though resistance is common among some strains. Sulfacytine acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase, thereby blocking bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by preventing condensation of pteridine with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), an essential step in folic acid biosynthesis. This inhibition disrupts DNA synthesis in bacteria, resulting in bacteriostatic effects. Sulfacytine was discontinued from clinical use around 2006[3][5].
