Overview

Sulfadiazine is a sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat or prevent infections caused by certain bacteria and parasites. It is commonly indicated for urinary tract infections, ear infections, meningitis, malaria, toxoplasmosis (especially in combination with pyrimethamine), trachoma, chancroid, inclusion conjunctivitis, nocardiosis, and as prophylaxis for rheumatic fever and meningitis[1][3][4][5]. Sulfadiazine acts as a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase (also known as dihydropteroate synthase), which is essential for folic acid synthesis in bacteria. By inhibiting this enzyme and interfering with the processing of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), sulfadiazine disrupts bacterial growth and replication[4][5]. It does not have activity against viral infections.
