Each component inhibits the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase in bacteria, competitively blocking the incorporation of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into dihydropteroate, thereby preventing the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid and subsequent folate-dependent DNA processes. This results in bacteriostatic effects against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
