Overview

Sulfadiazine + trimethoprim is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in animals, especially horses. The combination acts synergistically by inhibiting sequential steps in the bacterial folic acid synthesis pathway: sulfadiazine inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, while trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase. This dual inhibition results in a bactericidal effect against susceptible bacteria. It is indicated for the treatment of respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, wound and uterine infections, abscesses, strangles (in horses), equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), and other conditions caused by susceptible microorganisms[2][3][9]. The drug is available as oral suspensions, boluses/tablets/paste/injection for animal use.
