Overview

Sulfadiazine zinc is a topical antimicrobial agent consisting of the zinc salt of sulfadiazine, primarily indicated for the prevention and treatment of infection in burn wounds. As a sulfonamide antibiotic, it functions by competitively inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), which is critical for bacterial folic acid synthesis, thereby providing broad-spectrum bacteriostatic activity. The zinc component of the molecule enhances the therapeutic profile by promoting re-epithelialization and wound healing, while also offering mild astringent and antimicrobial properties. In clinical practice, particularly in China, it is often formulated as a 'compound' gel and has been evaluated in Phase 4 trials for second-degree burns as an alternative to silver sulfadiazine, aiming to provide effective infection control and wound closure without the risk of silver-associated skin staining.
