Overview

Sulfadimethoxine is a long-acting sulfonamide antibiotic primarily used in veterinary medicine to treat a variety of bacterial and protozoal infections, most notably coccidiosis in dogs, cats, poultry, and livestock. It is also effective against respiratory, urinary tract, enteric (gastrointestinal), and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms such as streptococci, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, salmonella, klebsiella, proteus, shigella and others. Sulfadimethoxine acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase in bacteria and some protozoa. By mimicking para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), it blocks folic acid synthesis required for nucleic acid production (DNA/RNA), resulting in bacteriostatic activity—it inhibits growth but does not directly kill pathogens. The drug is available as oral tablets or suspensions for animals; its use in humans has been largely discontinued or withdrawn in many countries due to safety concerns but remains approved over-the-counter in some regions such as Russia[1][2][3][5].
