Septosyl is a topical ophthalmic antibiotic ointment containing sulfadimidine (also known as sulfamethazine). Developed and marketed by the Hungarian company PannonPharma, it belongs to the sulfonamide class of antibiotics. The drug exerts its bacteriostatic effect by competitively inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), which is a critical step in the bacterial synthesis of folic acid. By blocking the production of dihydrofolic acid, it prevents bacterial nucleic acid synthesis and growth. Septosyl is primarily indicated for the treatment of superficial bacterial infections of the eye, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis, and is also used for the prevention of neonatal ophthalmia caused by susceptible organisms.
