Sulfaguanidine is a sulfonamide antibiotic and a guanidine derivative of sulfanilamide, primarily used in veterinary medicine and formerly in human medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal bacterial infections such as bacillary dysentery. It is characterized by poor absorption from the gut, which allows it to act locally within the intestinal tract. The drug exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting dihydropteroate synthase, thereby blocking the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in bacteria. This mechanism disrupts folic acid synthesis, leading to bacteriostatic activity against susceptible organisms[1][4][8]. Sulfaguanidine was introduced in 1940 and has been widely used for enteric infections due to its minimal systemic absorption[1].
