Sulfamerazine is a small molecule sulfonamide antibiotic used primarily for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including bronchitis, prostatitis, and urinary tract infections. It acts as a bacteriostatic agent by inhibiting the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase (also known as dihydrofolate synthetase), which is essential for folic acid synthesis in bacteria. By competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for binding to this enzyme, sulfamerazine disrupts the production of dihydrofolic acid and subsequently impairs nucleic acid and DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms. Sulfamerazine has been approved for both human and veterinary use but is no longer available for human use in some regions such as the United States[1][2][5][6][8].
