Sulfameter (also known as sulfamethoxydiazine or sulfametoxydiazine) is a long-acting sulfonamide antibacterial agent. It is used primarily in the treatment of urinary tract infections and as a leprostatic agent for leprosy. Sulfameter acts as a bacteriostatic antibiotic by inhibiting bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), thereby blocking folic acid synthesis essential for bacterial growth and replication. This mechanism leads to inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis in susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria[1][2][3][6][7][8].
