Overview

Sulfamethazine is a synthetic sulfonamide antibacterial agent used primarily in veterinary medicine and previously in human medicine for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It acts as a bacteriostatic agent by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, thereby blocking the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is essential for bacterial DNA and nucleotide synthesis. Sulfamethazine has been used to treat respiratory diseases and promote growth in food-producing animals such as cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. Its spectrum of activity is similar to other sulfonamides[1][2][3][4][5][8].
