Overview

Sulfamethoxazole is a synthetic sulfonamide antibiotic with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase, an enzyme involved in the bacterial synthesis of folic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). By blocking folic acid production, it inhibits DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Sulfamethoxazole is effective against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and is commonly used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), gastrointestinal infections (including traveler's diarrhea), skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. It is often combined with trimethoprim for enhanced efficacy but can be used alone for certain indications[1][3][5][7].
