Overview

Bumexazole is a brand name for the combination antibiotic co-trimoxazole, which consists of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is an anti-infective agent used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those of the urinary tract, respiratory system, and gastrointestinal tract, as well as Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia. The drug works through a synergistic sequential blockade of bacterial folic acid synthesis: sulfamethoxazole inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, while trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase. This dual action effectively halts bacterial growth and replication by preventing the production of tetrahydrofolic acid, an essential precursor for nucleic acid synthesis. Bumexazole is marketed by Pharmacell Genomics and is available in various formulations, including tablets and oral suspensions.
