Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AlphaTrim is a branded generic fixed-dose combination of the sulfonamide antibiotic sulfamethoxazole and the dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor trimethoprim (co-trimoxazole). Developed by Aleppo Pharmaceutical, it is approved for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and middle ear infections. Sulfamethoxazole inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), while trimethoprim blocks the production of tetrahydrofolic acid from dihydrofolic acid by reversibly inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase. Together, they exhibit a synergistic bactericidal effect by blocking two consecutive steps in the bacterial biosynthesis of essential nucleic acids and proteins.
