Overview

Sulfamethoxypyrazine is a long-acting sulfonamide antibacterial agent used in the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections and malaria. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, thereby blocking the incorporation of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into folic acid. This inhibition disrupts folic acid synthesis in bacteria and protozoa such as Plasmodium species (malaria parasites), leading to impaired DNA and RNA synthesis. Sulfamethoxypyrazine is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria but resistance can occur. It has been used for respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and malaria prophylaxis or treatment[2][7].
