Overview
Sulfamoxole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that acts as a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase, which is essential for the synthesis of folic acid in bacteria. By inhibiting this enzyme, sulfamoxole disrupts the production of folic acid, an important metabolite required for DNA synthesis and cell division in bacteria. This results in a bacteriostatic effect, preventing bacterial growth and multiplication. Sulfamoxole shares its mechanism with other sulfonamide antibiotics and exhibits similar antibacterial activity and resistance profiles[6][8]. It is primarily used to treat bacterial infections.
