Overview

This is a combination of two topical antimicrobial agents, mafenide acetate (marketed as Sulfamylon) and silver nitrate. Both are used primarily in the management of burn wounds to prevent and treat infections. Mafenide acetate is a synthetic sulfonamide derivative with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, particularly effective against gram-negative organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It penetrates burn eschar and exerts its effect on both viable and nonviable tissue, making it useful for deep burns[1][2]. Silver nitrate acts as an anti-infective agent by releasing silver ions that denature proteins and disrupt microbial cell walls, providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial coverage[6]. The combination may be used sequentially or together in specialized protocols for severe burns or wounds at high risk of infection.
