Overview

Sulfanegen is an experimental small molecule prodrug of 3-mercaptopyruvic acid (3-MP), developed as a cyanide antidote for mass casualty scenarios. It acts via the enzyme 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MST), which transfers sulfur from 3-MP to cyanide, converting the toxin to non-toxic thiocyanate for renal excretion. Unlike current intravenous antidotes like hydroxocobalamin or sodium thiosulfate, sulfanegen offers intramuscular or oral administration, addressing short half-life issues of 3-MP through in vivo release, with proven efficacy in murine, rabbit, and porcine models of lethal cyanide poisoning.[1][3][5]
