Sulfaquinoxaline is a synthetic small molecule veterinary drug belonging to the sulfonamide class. It is primarily used as an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis in poultry (chickens, turkeys), cattle, sheep, and swine. It is also used to help control mortality from acute fowl cholera (caused by Pasteurella multocida) and fowl typhoid in chickens and turkeys[1][3][5]. Sulfaquinoxaline acts by inhibiting dihydropteroate synthetase, thereby blocking folic acid synthesis essential for nucleic acid formation in bacteria and protozoa such as Eimeria species[6][8]. Its peak activity against coccidia occurs at the second schizont stage of their life cycle[6]. The drug is minimally absorbed systemically when administered orally, acting mainly within the gastrointestinal tract[5]. Hemorrhagic syndrome can occur due to its interference with vitamin K metabolism in some animals on medicated feed[1][6].
