Overview

Sulfasymazine is a long-acting sulfonamide antibiotic. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is responsible for the conversion of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) into dihydropteroate, a precursor of folic acid. By blocking this pathway, sulfasymazine inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis and growth. It was primarily utilized for the treatment of urinary tract infections and other systemic bacterial infections due to its high solubility in urine and prolonged duration of action compared to earlier sulfonamides.
