Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sulfated hyaluronic acid (sHA) is a chemically modified derivative of native hyaluronic acid (HA) characterized by the introduction of sulfate groups onto its backbone. This modification increases its negative charge density, which significantly enhances its resistance to hyaluronidase-mediated enzymatic degradation and improves its water-binding capacity. Sulfated hyaluronic acid mimics naturally occurring sulfated glycosaminoglycans (such as heparan sulfate) and exhibits high-affinity electrostatic interactions with various heparin-binding growth factors and cytokines, including VEGF-A, FGF2, TGF-β1, and IL-4. These interactions enable sHA to modulate inflammatory responses, promote angiogenesis, and regulate extracellular matrix remodeling. Developed by the University of Macau, Zhuhai UM Science and Technology Research Institute, and Xiamen Humanity Hospital, sulfated hyaluronic acid is being evaluated in clinical trials as a topical cream or gel for burn wound healing and scar prevention.
