Overview

Sulfathiourea is a short‐acting sulfonamide antibiotic belonging to the class of aminobenzenesulfonamides and thioureas. It acts as an antibacterial agent by inhibiting dihydropteroate synthase (EC 2.5.1.15), thereby interfering with folic acid synthesis in bacteria, which is essential for their growth and replication[1][2]. Sulfathiourea is functionally related to sulfanilamide and has been shown to be bactericidal when added early in bacterial culture growth, with particular efficacy against Gram-positive organisms such as haemolytic streptococci and staphylococci, though it is less effective than some other sulfonamides against most Gram-negative organisms except Shigella[3][5]. It has been marketed under the brand name Badional.
