Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sulfisoxazole is a synthetic sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat or prevent a variety of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, otitis media (ear infections), and meningitis. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase in bacteria, thereby blocking the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is essential for folic acid production and bacterial growth. Sulfisoxazole is effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms but will not work for viral infections such as colds or flu[1][2][3][4][6].
