Drug intelligence / Profile preview
sulfo-tanshinone sodium (also known as sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate) is a water-soluble sulfonated derivative of tanshinone IIA, a major lipophilic diterpenoid quinone extracted from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen). Developed by SPH No. 1 Biochemical & Pharmaceutical, it is approved in China for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, and myocardial infarction. The drug exhibits multi-targeted pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anticoagulant effects. It acts as a negative allosteric modulator of the purinergic receptor P2X7, inhibits store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) through store-operated calcium channels (SOCC) by downregulating transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) proteins, and modulates various transcription factors such as NF-κB and Nrf2. It is administered via injection (intramuscular, intravenous, or intravenous infusion).
