Sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin sodium is a highly water-soluble anionic derivative of β-cyclodextrin developed as a pharmaceutical excipient to enhance the solubility and stability of poorly soluble drugs. It forms noncovalent inclusion complexes with drug molecules through its hydrophobic cavity and hydrophilic exterior. This improves drug solubility, stability, safety (notably reducing nephrotoxicity and hemolytic potential), controls release rates, masks unpleasant odors or tastes, and enables parenteral administration of otherwise insoluble compounds. The compound is not a single molecule but a mixture of substituted cyclodextrins with varying degrees and positions of substitution. It was originally developed by Cydex in the 1990s under the brand name Captisol[5][6]. Sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin sodium is widely used as an excipient in injectable formulations (e.g., voriconazole injection), oral drugs, nasal sprays, ophthalmic preparations—especially for nitrogen-containing drugs due to its strong affinity for such molecules[4][5][6].
