Sulfonamide carbonic anhydrase inhibitor 7 is a derivative of 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamide, characterized by its potent inhibitory properties against carbonic anhydrase (CA) isozymes II and IV. These enzymes play a critical role in the production of aqueous humor within the eye. Initially, the compound exhibited very low water solubility, rendering it topically ineffective as an intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering agent. However, when complexed with cyclodextrins (beta-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin), it demonstrated effectiveness and long-lasting IOP-lowering effects in animal models of glaucoma, suggesting its potential as a topically acting antiglaucoma agent.
