Sulfonamide carbonic anhydrase inhibitor 9 is a small molecule, specifically a 1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamide derivative, developed as a topically acting antiglaucoma agent. It functions by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase (CA) isozymes II and IV, which are involved in the production of aqueous humor within the eye. This inhibition leads to a reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP), making it a potential treatment for glaucoma. Initially, the compound faced challenges with topical effectiveness due to its very low water solubility, but its complexes with cyclodextrins, such as beta-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, demonstrated effective and long-lasting IOP-lowering effects in animal models of glaucoma.
