Overview

Sulfonated albumin is a posttranslationally modified form of albumin that plays a significant role in the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)-related liver fibrosis. Elevated levels of sulfonated albumin are observed in both human and mouse models of NAFLD. It promotes inflammation, hepatic steatosis, and liver fibrosis by activating hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) through interaction with the GAL3 receptor, which subsequently triggers the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway. Sulfonated albumin is being investigated as a potential diagnostic biomarker for liver fibrosis and an important therapeutic target for NAFLD.
