Overview

Sulfotanshinone sodium (sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate) is a water-soluble derivative of tanshinone IIA, a major active lipophilic component extracted from the root of *Salvia miltiorrhiza* (Danshen), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. It has been approved in China for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke. It exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties. It acts as a negative allosteric modulator of the purinergic receptor P2X7 and inhibits store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) by downregulating canonical transient receptor potential (TRPC) channels, specifically TRPC1 and TRPC6. It is also being investigated for other indications, such as chronic renal failure (to prevent arteriovenous fistula complications) and pulmonary hypertension.
