Sulfur hexafluoride is an inert, inorganic gas that functions as an ultrasound contrast agent. It is formulated into microbubbles, typically with a phospholipid shell, which are administered as a suspension. These microbubbles enhance the echogenicity of blood and fluids, thereby improving the signal-to-noise ratio and visualization of anatomical structures during ultrasound examinations. It is used for diagnostic purposes in various applications, including echocardiography to improve the delineation of cardiac chambers and left ventricular endocardial borders, diagnostic assessment of vessels (such as cerebral, carotid, peripheral, liver, and breast vessels), and for evaluating suspected or known vesicoureteral reflux in pediatric patients. The drug is developed and manufactured by Bracco.
