Overview

Sulfur hexafluoride lipid type a microspheres is an injectable ultrasound contrast agent composed of microbubbles containing the inert gas sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) encapsulated within a phospholipid shell. It is used to enhance the quality of ultrasound imaging by increasing the reflectivity of blood or tissues, thereby improving visualization during echocardiography and ultrasonography. The drug is indicated for opacifying the left ventricular chamber and improving delineation of endocardial borders in patients with suboptimal echocardiograms, as well as for characterizing focal liver lesions and evaluating vesicoureteral reflux in pediatric urinary tract imaging. Its mechanism relies on acoustic impedance mismatch between gas-filled microbubbles and surrounding tissue, which enhances backscatter during ultrasound[2][5][8]. Developed by Bracco, it is marketed under the brand name Lumason.
