Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sulfur ointment is a topical over-the-counter (OTC) medication containing elemental sulfur as its active pharmaceutical ingredient. It is widely used to treat various dermatological conditions, including acne, scabies, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, tinea capitis, pityriasis simplex, and chronic eczema. Upon topical application, elemental sulfur reacts with cysteine residues in the stratum corneum of the skin to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and pentathionic acid. This reaction reduces disulfide bonds in keratins, leading to keratolytic (exfoliating) activity that promotes desquamation and unclogs pores. Additionally, the generated hydrogen sulfide and pentathionic acid exert antibacterial, antifungal, and scabicidal effects, making it effective against *Cutibacterium acnes*, *Malassezia* species, and *Sarcoptes scabiei* mites.
