sulodexide

**Sulodexide** is a standardized, porcine-derived glycosaminoglycan drug substance comprising a fast-moving heparin-like fraction of approximately 80% and dermatan sulfate of approximately 20%. It is an antithrombotic and endothelial-protective heparinoid used in several non-US markets for vascular disorders, including chronic venous ulcers. Its anticoagulant activity is mediated mainly through potentiation of antithrombin and heparin cofactor II, resulting in inhibition of factor Xa and thrombin with generally less systemic anticoagulant effect than unfractionated heparin at therapeutic doses. Additional reported actions include profibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory, endothelial glycocalyx-supporting, and heparanase-inhibitory effects. Keryx developed an oral formulation, Sulonex, for diabetic nephropathy, but large Phase 3 diabetic-kidney-disease studies did not demonstrate renal or albuminuria benefit and the program was terminated.
