Overview

Sultopride is an atypical antipsychotic of the benzamide chemical class used primarily in Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong for the treatment of schizophrenia. It was launched by Sanofi-Aventis in 1976. Sultopride acts as a selective antagonist at dopamine receptor D2 and dopamine receptor D3 and also has clinically relevant affinity for the gamma-hydroxybutyrate receptor (GHB receptor). Its mechanism involves blocking dopaminergic neurotransmission in both striatal and limbic regions of the brain. The drug is administered orally or via intramuscular injection and is indicated for acute and chronic psychoses as well as emergency management of agitation in psychotic or aggressive patients[1][2][3][4][7].
