SUN-001 is an investigational, inhaled small molecule inhibitor of the integrin αvβ6, developed by Sunterra Bio for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Integrin αvβ6 is highly expressed on the surface of lung epithelial cells during injury and plays a critical role in the local activation of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), a potent pro-fibrotic cytokine. By targeting αvβ6, SUN-001 aims to block the activation of TGF-β specifically within the lung tissue, potentially halting or reversing the progression of fibrosis while avoiding the systemic toxicities associated with broad TGF-β inhibition. The drug is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 first-in-human study to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics following single and multiple ascending inhaled doses.
