Overview

SUN Y7017 is a small molecule agonist of the alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7 nAChR) that was originally developed by Suntory Pharmaceutical (later acquired by Daiichi Sankyo) for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The α7 nAChR is a ligand-gated ion channel highly expressed in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex, regions of the brain that are essential for learning and memory. By selectively activating these receptors, SUN Y7017 was intended to enhance cholinergic neurotransmission and improve cognitive function in patients with dementia. Although the compound progressed into Phase 1 clinical trials to evaluate its safety and pharmacokinetics, its development was ultimately discontinued, reflecting the significant clinical hurdles encountered by the α7 nAChR agonist class in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
