SUN13837 is a synthetic small molecule that acts as a potent modulator of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs), specifically mimicking the neuroprotective effects of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) without promoting cell proliferation. It is orally active, capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier, and was developed for neuroprotection and axonal outgrowth in conditions such as acute spinal cord injury and stroke. Preclinical studies demonstrated its ability to enhance neurite outgrowth, promote functional recovery after neural injury, and provide neuroprotection by limiting primary mechanical damage at injury sites. Unlike bFGF protein therapies, SUN13837 does not induce inflammation or glial scar formation due to lack of proliferative activity. The drug was initially developed by Daiichi Sankyo and reached Phase 2 clinical trials for acute spinal cord injury and stroke before development was discontinued[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
