Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sunbanghwalmyung-eum (SBH), also known as Xian-Fang-Huo-Ming-Yin in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Seonbanghwalmyeong-eum in Traditional Korean Medicine, is a multi-component herbal medicine traditionally used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Recent preclinical research has demonstrated its potential as a therapeutic agent for obesity and metabolic disorders. SBH exerts systemic anti-obesity effects by downregulating adipogenic transcription factors, including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPα), in liver, adipose, and muscle tissues. Furthermore, it activates the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), promoting lipolysis and improving plasma lipid profiles (triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL-c). SBH also attenuates obesity-related chronic inflammation by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), and monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP1).
