Overview

Supermeres are non-membranous natural nanoparticles, approximately 25 nm in size, that serve as a novel delivery platform for genetic cargo such as mRNA. Developed by SHIFTBIO Inc., supermeres are isolated from conditioned media (e.g., HEK293FT cells) via sequential ultracentrifugation. Unlike lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), which primarily accumulate in the liver, supermeres exhibit a favorable biodistribution profile with minimal liver/spleen accumulation and preferential targeting of the kidneys. They demonstrate significantly higher mRNA delivery efficiency compared to small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), likely due to enhanced cellular internalization or endosomal processing. This platform is being positioned for next-generation mRNA therapeutics targeting renal and other extrahepatic diseases.
