Overview

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme found in nearly all living cells. It catalyzes the conversion of superoxide radicals, which are harmful byproducts of oxygen metabolism, into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This reaction protects cells from oxidative damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids. SOD contains metal cofactors such as copper, zinc, manganese, or iron at its active site and is essential for cellular defense against reactive oxygen species. Medicinally, SOD has been used as an injectable treatment for inflammatory conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; it has also been studied for use in interstitial cystitis, gout, paraquat poisoning, cancer adjunct therapy (e.g., improving radiation tolerance), lung problems in newborns, kidney transplant rejection prevention, and minimizing heart damage after myocardial infarction. Oral forms are marketed as dietary supplements but have questionable bioavailability[1][2][3][5][6][8].
