Superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) mRNA is an mRNA-based therapeutic designed to induce the expression of the extracellular superoxide dismutase enzyme. SOD3 is a key antioxidant enzyme that localizes to the extracellular matrix, where it catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide and oxygen. By delivering the genetic instructions for SOD3 via mRNA, typically encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the therapy aims to restore antioxidant capacity in tissues under high oxidative stress. This approach is primarily being investigated for cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, such as heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and inflammatory lung diseases like acute lung injury or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The goal is to mitigate the tissue damage, fibrosis, and inflammation driven by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS).
