Superparamagnetic iron oxide refers to a class of nanoparticles composed primarily of magnetite (Fe3O4) or maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) that exhibit superparamagnetism—meaning they become magnetized only in the presence of an external magnetic field and do not retain residual magnetism once the field is removed. These particles are typically engineered at the nanoscale and can be surface-functionalized for specific biomedical applications. Their primary mechanisms involve acting as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), serving as vehicles for targeted drug delivery, and enabling magnetic hyperthermia therapy where localized heating induced by alternating magnetic fields can destroy cancer cells. Superparamagnetic iron oxides are valued for their biocompatibility, traceability in biological systems, and ability to be functionalized with various coatings to optimize pharmacokinetics and reduce cytotoxicity[1][4][5]. They have been investigated extensively in preclinical research and some clinical settings.
